"It's One's Personal Option To Adopt Whatever Religion He Wants": Delhi HC Dismisses PIL Trying to Monitor Religious Conversions

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court dismissed a plea which was aiming towards seeking control over religious conversions through intimidation.

The bench hearing the issue asked the petitioner, 'It's one's personal choice to follow whatever religion they want. You're not even the aggrieved party in this matter, why should we issue notice in this PIL'.

Further the court also contended that it was not able to understand the prayer which the petitioner sought to, before the bench.

The petitioner also noted that there are cases in which religious conversions are conducted by way of black magic or using other spiritual methods. The petition stated, the Organizations operate very smoothly targeting socially economically downtrodden men, women and children, and in particular of the schedule caste and schedule tribe community, with fraudulent tricks such as mass prayers of miracle healing and marketing campaigns of black magic’.

The appeal also calls for directives to ban religious gatherings arranged with the intention of misleading people or attracting masses that are unaware of entering a specific religious community or faith through claims of possession of supernatural forces that are false and exaggerated.

It is argued that the practice of religious conversions is in violation not only of one's constitutional right i.e. right to preach and practice one's own religion, but also of the duties enshrined in Article 51A of the Constitution.

It is also contended by the petitioner that people who are economically downtrodden which included men, women and even children are mainly targeted for the mass religious conversion.
