Woman Accusing Trump's Supreme Court Nominee of Sexual Assault sets Conditions for Testifying

Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has accused President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, is willing to testify next week in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee if certain terms were met, her lawyer told the committee on Thursday.

Ford’s lawyer also told the committee that she cannot appear for the hearing scheduled on Monday, calling the date Republicans set as “arbitrary”, according to the reports published in The Washington Post and The New York Times.

“A hearing on Monday is not possible, and the committee’s insistence that it occur then is arbitrary in any event,” Katz said further adding:

As you are aware, she has been receiving death threats, which have been reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and she and her family have been forced out of their home.”

She wishes to testify, provided that we can agree on terms that are fair and which ensure her safety.”

However, Ford’s lawyer said that she was prepared to testify even if the F.B.I. does not investigate her accusations, as she had previously requested. This added another twist in an on-again-off-again negotiation between Ford and Senate Republicans, who have scheduled a Monday hearing and set Friday as a deadline for Ford to decide whether she would attend the scheduled hearing.

Ford’s accusations have thrust President Donald Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the top court into turmoil, just days before he was to receive a vote in the committee.

While the democrats immediately called for a delay in a key committee vote set for this later week, a Republican, said he’s “not comfortable” voting on the U.S. Supreme Court nomination of Kavanaugh without first hearing from the accuser.

Several Republicans also fear that any further delay in the nomination could be endangered by a possible Democratic sweep of the upcoming congressional midterm elections in November.
