What if Taj Mahal's World Heritage Tag is withdrawn, asks SC

Slamming the UP government, the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) authority and the Centre, the Supreme Court on Thursday said that Taj Mahal’s maintenance has become a joke, and wondered what would happen if it loses its world heritage body tag.

We hope it doesn’t happen. But what if UNESCO withdraws Taj’s world heritage tag considering the present situation. It will be such an embarrassment. Who is responsible? Decide amongst yourself”, the Supreme Court bench of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Deepak asked the Centre.

Responding to the bench the Centre’s top law officer KK Venugopal agreed, “It would be a great, great embarrassment for the country”. He then assured to come back to the apex court this month-end with the names of departments that would be accountable for the large protection zone around the Taj Mahal.

At this point, TTZ’s authority chairman K Ram Mohan Rao told the court that reminders were being sent to the government for staff.

After hearing Rao telling manpower crunch as the reason behind TTZ’s inability to perform, Justice Madan B Lokur said,

The Taj Trapezium Zone management is a flop. Everything has become a joke. What is this Tamasha going on? You can make a comedy show out of it.”

The SC bench was angry after it discovered that 1,167 polluting industries were still functioning from the Taj Trapezium Zone, thereby violating several of its orders and that there was no authority to own up the blatant violation of its earlier orders.

The bench also worried that the centre’s approach could cost Taj Mahal its world heritage status.

“The UNESCO's world heritage centre is in Paris. Have you been filing management plan (of Taj Mahal) before the world heritage centre of UNESCO? This is not being filed. What will happen if the UNESCO says that we will withdraw the world heritage tag of Taj Mahal,” the bench asked and directed the centre to report on this aspect too.
