US and Taliban agree to end war in Afghanistan after 19 years

On Saturdayi.e. 29th February 2020, the United States revealed that it has agreed to terms with the Taliban to end the 19-year war in Afghanistan.

US has agreed to reduce troop presence in Afghanistan as part of the peace deal. Taliban has agreed to sever all ties with international terror groups, in return. US will track compliance with the Taliban, and will phase out troops accordingly. Additionally, following the agreement, United States agrees to give a joint statement of  US and Afghan relationship.

However, the Afghan Government has not fully embraced all of the terms of the US-Taliban deal. The deal requires the government of Afghanistan to release more than 5,000 Taliban prisoners in exchange for the release of 1,000 prisoners by the Taliban. Sunday, Afghanistan's president declared he'll refuse to release the Taliban prisoners. Afghanistan's president isn't the only critic of the deal.

Although many officials in the Trump administration welcomed the deal to resolve the long-lasting war but many criticized the ability of the President to negotiate with the Taliban.Former National Security Advisor John Bolton criticized the agreement on Twitter, saying, “Signing this agreement with Taliban is an unacceptable risk to America’s civilian population. This is an Obama-style deal. Legitimizing Taliban sends the wrong signal to ISIS and al Qaeda terrorists, and to America’s enemies generally”.
