Telecom operators file plea in Bombay High Court against Trai’s order to cut International call termination charges

Mumbai: Trouble continues for Telecom operators. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had in the month of December reduced International Mobile Termination (ITC) charges-a money paid by International operator to local operator for receiving the call- from 53 paise per minute to 30 paise per minute. The Telco’s have said this has led to huge loss for them and it is like double whammy for them as they were already suffering from the pangs of intense competition.

Two of the major operators Airtel and Idea had filed a plea with the Bombay High Court asking for stay on the order .Now Vodafone has also filed a plea. The court has decided to club these pleas and hear them as one. Incidentally Vodafone and Idea are undergoing merger process.

Arguing in the court senior counsel Darius Khambatta appearing for Idea Cellular said, "We are bleeding and suffering huge losses”.Both Airtel and Idea had said such a order hurts the bottomline of the companies and ultimately will affect the customers as well.

Trai had then said that its aim was to stymie the “menace” of grey route of international calling, which it said also posed a “serious threat” to national security. However the regulator is yet to present its side of the argument in the court.

The matter will be next heard on June 19.
