Supreme Court gets 3 sitting woman judges for the first time in its 68-year history

With the swearing-in of Justice Indira Banerjee as Supreme Court judge, the top court will now have three women judges for the first time in its 68-year history.

Besides Justice Banerjee, Justice R Banumathi and Justice Indu Malhotra are the two other women judges to be elevated as the SC judge.

While Justice Indira Banerjee was appointed as the eight woman judge in the apex court, senior advocate Indu Malhotra was elevated as the seventh judge in the SC.

In fact, Indu Malhotra was the first senior woman advocate to be appointed directly as the SC judge.

Further, Justice R Banumathi is the most senior most judges among the three sitting woman judges. She was appointed as the apex court judge on August 13, 2014 and continued to be sole woman judge on the SC bench till Justice Indu Malhotra was appointed to the Bench in April this year.

Justice Banumathi will retire on July 19, 2020, while Justice Malhotra will demit office on March 13, 2021. And, Justice Indira Banerjee will retire on September 24, 2022.
