Supreme Court Collegium recommends names of Chief Justices for 4 High Courts

The Supreme Court Collegium has passed resolutions recommending the appointment of new Chief Justices to the High Courts of Allahabad, Patna, Madhya Pradesh and Tripura.

The recommendations made in the resolutions, dated October 29, are as follows:

  1. Justice Govind Mathur recommended as Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court

Justice Govind Mathur, who was has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Allahabad HC last week, has been recommended to be appointed as the next Chief Justice of the same court.

The senior-most judge of the Rajasthan HC, Justice Mathur’s appointment comes in the wake of vacant seat following the retirement of Mr. Justice DB Bhosale.

  1. Justice AP Sahi recommended as Chief Justice of Patna High Court

Justice Amreshwar Pratap Sahi currently a judge of the Allahabad High Court has been recommended to be appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Patna.

Considering that Justice AP Sahi is the senior-most from Allahabad HC, the Collegium is of the view that he is suitable for the post of the Chief Justice of the Patna HC which would be falling vacant consequent upon the elevation of Justice MR Shah to the Supreme Court.

  1. Justice SK Seth recommended as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court

Madhya Pradesh High Court judge, Justice SK Seth has been recommended as Chief Justice of the High Court.

While recommending Justice Seth’s name, the Collegium has invoked the provision of the Memorandum of Procedure, which provides for elevation of judge as CJ in his own High Court in case his retirement is due in a year or less. And, Justice Seth is due to retire in June next year.

  1. Justice Sanjay Karol recommended as Chief Justice of Tripura High Court

Himachal Pradesh High Court judge, Justice Sanjay Karol has been recommended to be appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Tripura HC.

While recommending his name, the Collegium noted that currently there is no Chief Justice originally from the Himachal Pradesh HC and that Justice Karol name became due for appointment on 22nd February, following the retirement of Chief Justice Abhilasha Kumari of the Manipur HC (whose parent High Court was Himachal Pradesh) last February.
