Supreme Court asks NUALS to redress the complaints against CLAT by Friday

While hearing a petition against CLAT, the Supreme Court on Thursday asked the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) to produce a “wholesome solution” to redress the law students’ complaints.

The complaints were about inconsistencies that the students experienced while appearing for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). While some complained that their computers hanged, several others faced technical glitches, including slow biometric verification, failure of log-in system, blank screens, etc.

CLAT 2018 exam was conducted by NUALS, on May 13, with the help of a private firm M/s Sify Technologies Limited. The test was meant for the admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of prestigious national law schools.

Several pleas were filed before various high courts and in the apex court seeking quashing of the CLAT exam besides conducting a re-test of the exam.

However, the petition filed by 6 CLAT candidates was heard by a Vacation Bench of Supreme Court comprising of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Navin Sinha on Thursday.

During the hearing, Justice Khanwilkar observed that there were a number of factual aspects and complaints that needed to be examined. Based on the observation, he suggested that the respondents (NUALS) should provide a forum/body to look into the complaints and accordingly provide a wholesome solution.

The bench also directed all High Courts to restrain from – entertaining any fresh plea and hearing similar pending pleas on the issue till the next SC hearing.
