Singing “Vande Mataram” is now compulsory in all public and private sectors, Madras HC

In order to lit up an inspiring sense of patriotism in every individual of the state, the Madras High Court, on Tuesday, gave the headings to make the singing of National Song “Vande Mataram” mandatory in every Schools, colleges or institutions, at least once a week. The court has passed orders to make it a regular activity and must be played and sung in all government offices and institutions, private companies and industries, once a month.

The court was investigating the petition filed by Mr. K. Veeramani, who claimed to be wrongly disqualified for the post of teacher in a Tamil Nadu Government school when he missed the cut off by one mark in the Teacher’s Recruitment Board Examination. Mr. Veeramani had now challenged that he mistakenly lost one mark on a question which had asked for the dialect in which Vande Mataram was composed. While the petitioner has answered that it was composed in Bengali, the answer key said that it was composed in Sanskrit.      

Later, the Government agreed on the fact and accepted that it was composed in Bengali, after which, the court gave the petitioner his deserving mark.

Justice M.V. Muralidharan , then went on issue a slew of directions, observing

“The youth of this country are the future of tomorrow. This Court hopes and trusts that this order shall be taken in the right spirit and also implemented in letter and spirit by the citizenry of this great Nation,”

“Patriotism is an essential requirement for every citizen of this country. The fact that this country is our Motherland should always be remembered by every citizen of this country. Several people have sacrificed their lives and families to the independent struggle that prolonged for several decades. In these tough times, it was songs like our national song “Vande Matharam” which created a sense of belief and confidence in the people”.

Below are the instructions are given by the court:

1.    The National Song “Vande Mataram” must be played and sung in all schools, colleges, universities, institutions, at least once a week.

2.    The National Song “Vande Mataram” shall be sung in all private sectors, companies, industries, factories at least once a month.

3.    The director of public information has also received immediate instructions to interpret the song in Tamil and English versions, and asked to upload the Multilanguage versions of the song on the Government websites and social media sites.

4.    If anyone who finds it difficult to sing “Vande Mataram” and provide a legitimate reason for not singing or playing it, shall not be compelled or forced to do it,

5.    A copy of this arrangement should be marked to the Chief Secretary of Government of Tamil Nadu, who shall dispatch necessary policies focusing on the extent of this order and give instructions to the concerned authorities.
