Section 66A of IT Act scrapped down by the Supreme Court

According to Supreme Court of India Section 66A of Information Technology Act is unconstitutional and should be taken down immediately as it violates the basic fundamental rights of the citizens of India. This particular section of Information Technology Act, 2000 violates the fundamental right of Freedom of Speech and Expression under Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution.

According to the Court after scrapping down Section 66A, no police officer can arrest any individual for posting any updates on social media networks such as facebook, twitter, instagram etc.

Earlier the police officials had a right to arrest anyone who would post any updates targeting any member of a political party or on the basis of what was written on the internet. But now after scrapping Section 66A, the police officials will have no such rights.

This particular petition was filed by Shreya Singhal .The petitioner stated that the decision of scrapping down Section 66A of IT Act is a major transformation and by doing this the Court has protected the fundamental rights of every national.
