SC to Hear the Petition against Ban on Movie 'Padmaavat’ in 4 States

Though the film ‘Padmaavat’ will hit the theatres on January 25, the controversy around it doesn’t seem to be ending, as the film’s producer today moved the SC challenging the ban on its screening in four states, including Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

The film’s producer filed a petition, saying “the film has undergone many changes – including that of the title – to meet the suggestions of the Censor Board.” He further questioned the power of the state governments to impose a complete ban on the film when the SC in an earlier case clarified that screening of a film can only be suspended in a particular area because of the law and order situation in that area, it cannot be completely banned.

A bench led by the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra has agreed to hear the petition tomorrow.

The film ‘Padmaavat’ has been the target of the fringe group, Shri Rajput Karni Sena ever since its production kicked off. The group activists have been continuously protesting the film’s release, claiming that it distorts history – a charge the filmmakers have denied.

Originally titled Padmavati, the film was renamed to Padmaavat as suggested by the CBFC. In addition, the film was given clearance for release with U/V certificate and 5 modifications. However, despite such changes the members of the Karni Sena are in no mood to allow the release of Padmaavat.

Releasing worldwide on January 25, Padmaavat will clash with Akshay Kumar’s starrer PadMan.
