SC tells Centre and Delhi Government to stop playing politics on sealing

New Delhi: Terming it is as almost last chance to make Delhi livable, the SC asked Centre and Delhi Government to cooperate on the issue of sealing and not politicise it. The Centre on its part submitted in the Supreme Court that as a first measure it will remove unauthorised encroachments from public streets, pavements, footpaths and roads  with the help of authorities like DDA, NDMC, MCD, the Delhi government and police.

The centre represented by additional solicitor general A N S Nadkarn assured the SC bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta that no street will be declared commercial unless a proper parking is provided for it. The centre also said any structure built on public land will also be demolished. ASG further informed the court that under vice chairman of DDA, a13- member Special task force (STF) is being constituted which will have powers to direct local bodies to stop illegal construction.

The action plan was prepared when in the last hearing SC had rapped the Centre for not taking steps to curb illegal constructions. The court, in the last hearing, had told the Centre, “There is no road and pavements in the city as they are being encroached. What have you done to remove the encroachment? Green area and roads in most of colonies are being used for parking space. What are you doing to remove the encroachment ”.
