SC says no to extension of deadline for NRC in Assam

New Delhi:  While listening to the plea for granting of extension to National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, the SC bench comprising of Justices Rajan Gogoi and R F Nariman refused extension of deadline for NRC in Assam.

The plea was made by centre and Assam government but the SC refused to grant any extension. NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela informed the court that by 31st January, around 2.29 core applications were scrutinised and another one crore may be scrutinized by 31st May. He said to the court that state  will require one more month for completing the registration.

For centre AG K K Venugopal appeared where as Assam government was represented by Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. He also stated in the court said the officials would also be required for preparing application of local body elections happening in March-April. This may affect the work related to NRC registration.

The AG pleaded before the court for extension of the deadline saying that the state government is doing its best but given the ground reality the extension needs to be granted. The learned judges didn’t accept the argument.
