SC refuses to extend deadline for publication of final Assam NRC beyond July 31

The Supreme Court bench comprising of CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Rohinton Nariman on refused to extend the deadline for the publication of the final NRC for the state of Assam beyond July 31.

The bench observed that "We are of the view that, in no circumstances, the publication of the final NRC should be stretched beyond July 31, 2019.

The SC said that the upcoming Lok Sabha election and exercise of NRC should not be affected, and asked the competent authorities to sit together to plan them.

The Top Court’s comments came after the Solicitor General, representing Assam Government, pointed out that during the elections the state administration will virtually be at the service of the EC and it will have to spare as many officials as asked for by the poll panel. Mehta said in the process NRC work might get affected.

The Bench asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to organise a meeting of EC, Assam chief secretary and state NRC coordinator and submit a report within a week and posted the matter for further hearing on February 5.
