SC Permits Media Persons to Carry Mobile Phones inside Courtrooms

The Supreme Court today passed an order allowing non-accredited journalists to carry cellphones inside its court rooms.

In a circular issued by Assistant Registrar Dr. Sushil Kr. Sharma, Chief Justice of India (CJI), Dipak Misra has allowed the request of media persons/journalists to carry mobile phones inside the court rooms.

The circular reads that “…Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India has been pleased to allow the Media Persons/ Journalists, who have been issued six months passes by the Registry, to carry mobile phones inside the Court Rooms on silent mode and that the Deputy Registrar (Public Relations) will endorse suitably on the passes that the person carrying Mobile Phone be allowed inside the Court Room.”

The court order, however, warned that the mobile phones inside the court rooms have to be on silent mode. But, “in case of a cell phone creating any disturbance/ nuisance inside Court Room will be confiscated by the Court Master and handed over to the Additional registrar (Security)”.

It’s been only a month since the Supreme Court had allowed accredited journalists to carry mobile phones inside the court rooms.

Before the latest SC order, only lawyers were allowed to take mobile phones inside court rooms. And the ability to live-tweet court sessions by certain lawyers and journalists in lawyers’ attire had caused displeasure among journalists, who then raised the issue before the CJI.
