SC dismisses petition of Andhra MLA for defamation case against a newspaper

New Delhi: Supreme Court dismissed a petition filed by YSR Congress party MLA, Rama Krishna Reddy, as per which he wanted to file a defamation suit against an Andhra Pradesh based newspaper, “Andhra Jyothi”. He alleged that his leader’s reputation had been tarnished by an article which was published in the daily, which stated that when Jagan Reddy, his leader met PM Narendra Modi, he had asked him to intervene and get the cases against him withdrawn. Whereas he met him for requesting him for a package for Andhra.

The MLA had filed a petition in Andhra High Court, but it was dismissed as Court said, only the person affected by the defamation can file an FIR.

Against this, he filed an appeal in Supreme Court. While rejecting his plea, Chief Justice, Dipak Misra who was leading a three judge bench said that these write-ups should be taken in a lighter way and should not become ground for filing defamation cases. His general message to politicians at large was to take criticism in their stride.
