SC directs Karti to appear before Investigation Officer for questioning

The Supreme Court has granted liberty to the Central Bureau of Investigation to interrogate Karti for as many days as it wants till the next hearing scheduled on August 28. The Court today, directed Karti Chidambaram, son of Former Union Miniter P. Chidambaram to appear before the Investigation Officer at CBI headquarters for questioning in a corruption case filed by CBI.

A bench Comprising CJI Khekhar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, ordered Karti to bring all documents necessary for his defense in the case. He is also allowed to be accompanied by his Advocate Subramaniam during the entire interrogation process.

Advocate Subramanium appearing for Karti, agreed to accompany Karti in the questioning before the Investigation Officer. The Court said that Karti must satisfy the investigation Officer and they will record the entire session.

Previously in the case, Madras High Court has granted interim relief to Karti against LOC issued by the CBI which prevented him to travel aboard. The Center raised voice against it in the Supreme Court. The Court said they will hear about Karti’s plea regarding the cancellation of Lookout Circular against him on September 1.

The Court asked Subramanium why you are telling all these stories about the case? If you already have appeared before the Investigating Officer, why can’t you do it now? Tell these stories to the Investigating Officer, he will decide whether your case holds water or not.

Later, agreeing on the demands of the Court, Subramanium demanded to let him accompany the accused in the room during the questioning process, the court granted.

The LOC is intended to prevent an accused from evading arrest. Once the accused appear before the IO, the purpose of LOC is done, Justice Chandrachud Observed and addressed Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI.

CJI Khekar also stated that the Court had bitter experience of allowing people to travel aboard and they never come back, even you had already booked your ticket to UK on August 16. Firstly, You prove your innocence before the Investigating Officer, then we will discuss the cancellation of the LOC.

Madras High Court also stayed the LOC against three more people issued by CBI on the suspicions of having involvement in the corruption process, Mr. Reddy, Mr. Vishwanath and Mr. Rajesh.
