SC asks HCs to speed up child abuse trials

New Delhi:  While hearing the PIL filed by advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava, which brought to the notice of the court large scale pendency of the case registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012, the Supreme Court bench asked high courts across the country to speed up trial of cases of sexual offence against children. It asked the HC's to ensure that the trial is completed within six months and investigation into the offence is completed within two months of the registration of an FIR.

The petitioner informed the court that till date over 1,12,628 case were pending trial under the Pocso Act and complained that though the Pocso Act contemplated early completion of the trial within six months of the offence, thousands of cases continued to linger for six-seven years without much progress. He asked for death penalty for those convicted of raping minor.

The advocate filed the PIL following a rape of 8 year old girl allegedly by her maternal uncle.

Replying for the centre, the additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand said that recent ordinance passed by the centre provided for death penalty for those convicted of raping minor.

The bench further directed all DGP's to set up special task forces. It asked the state police to carry out speedy investigation and provide necessary protection to witnesses for ensuring their testimony in the courts.
