SC Asks Centre to Expedite Shortlisting of Names for Appointment as Lokpal

The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to expedite the process of shortlisting names for Lokpal’s appointment.

The court’s observation came after Attorney General (AG) KK Venugopal submitted before the bench, headed by Ranjan Gogoi, that the selection panel headed by the Prime Minister will hold a meeting on July 19.

The AG further told the bench, which also had Justices R Banumathi and Navin Sinha, that the said meeting is organized for the purpose of establishing a search panel – that would recommend a panel of names for appointing a Lokpal.

The top court’s bench refrained from passing any directions in the matter, in light of the scheduled meeting of the Selection Committee on July 19.

The court, however, expressed hopefulness that the Selection Committee will duly create a Search Committee during its scheduled meeting.

“Let’s begin on an optimistic note. We do not wish to issue a mandamus. We hope that the selection and the search committee will expeditiously finalise the names. Let a report be filed next Monday. We shall take up the matter on Tuesday”, the bench said.

The bench further said that the newly constituted search committee will be responsible for laying down the norms and criteria.

At this point, the AG expressed reservation that the selection committee may not be able to finish up the deliberations in just one sitting “on July 19”, saying that “we cannot rush through”.

The court has scheduled the matter for hearing on July 24.
