PETITIONERS' REQUEST FOR CHANGING POLL TIMINGS NOT ACCEPTED BY ELECTION COMMISSION OF INDIA

A PIL was filed with the Election Commission of India regarding change in timings of voting with regards to the Ramzan period. The petitioners were of the view that during Ramzan, the Muslim people, voters for the present situation, are on fasting and they do not consume even water till dust. The time fixed for voting is 7 am. The Muslim voters would face immense difficulty in managing their custom of having a meal early morning at around 4 am and then standing in queue for casting their vote in the scorching heat. If the timings are not modified, it would lead to the deteriorated conditions like dehydration, heatstroke etc. Thus, the petitioners had sought the Election Commission of India to stretch the polling hours from 6th May and 19th May for two to two and a half hours.

Election Commission of India's Response:

The PIL was rejected by the Election Commission of India as did not give acknowledgement to the contention of the petitioners and said that it was not "feasible to alter the existing hours of poll for the 5th, 6th and 7th phases of general elections".

Thus, the voting will be open for all the voters, including Muslim ones, on the normal timings only. No specialized time has been fixed.
