Petition filed in SC asking paid news to be declared as corrupt practice

New Delhi: A BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay filed a petition in SC demanding paid news be declared as corrupt practice under Representation of People’s act 1951. It has also demanded implementation of recommendation of Election Commission (EC), Press Council of India (PCI) and the Law Commission of India (LCI) on the menace of paid news and political advertisement.

The petition demands that paid news to be treated as an offence and candidate found to be indulging in this practice be disqualified. Further it asks for adequate disclosure on the part of the media to declare the said content to be paid for and equivalent to an advertisement.

It further states that though EC bans campaigning 48 hours before the polls, the candidates issue advertisements in various medium like TV, Radio, newspapers and others which are designed to influence the voter. It states that paid news is generally paid from unaccounted money and helps the candidate escape official expense limit giving such candidate an unfair advantage over others.

It goes on to say that our democracy will be at peril if paid news and political advertisement becomes a new norm.
