Not Abandoning Operation To Save 15 Miners Trapped in Meghalaya Rat-Hole Mine: Centre Tells SC

The Union Government has told the Apex Court that it is not abandoning the operation to rescue 15 miners trapped for more than a month inside an illegal rat-hole coal mine filled with water in a remote part of Meghalaya.

The Meghalaya Government submitted a status report detailing the steps taken to rescue the miners from 7th to 17th January. In its status report, the State Government told the Supreme Court that on January 16, the remotely operated vehicle of the Indian Navy had detected a body at a depth of 210 feet in the flooded mine and efforts were being made to retrieve it but could not be completed as the body parts started disintegrating.

Avijit Mani Tripathi, Meghalaya counsel told the Bench of Justices A.K. Sikri and S. Abdul Nazeer that the unidentified body is in a decomposed state and it is almost impossible to recover it. The space is too narrow to bring the body out and danger of complete disintegration of the body is high.

The SC is hearing a PIL filed by Aditya N Prasad, who sought urgent steps to rescue the 15 miners trapped in the mine since December 13.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Court that both the Union Government and the State Government are not abandoning the operation and are taking actions to rescue the trapped miners.

The Supreme Court has stated disappointment over the measures taken by the State Government to rescue the trapped miners and added that quick, immediate and effective operation was needed to rescue them as it was a matter of life and death.

The matter has now been listed for the next week.
