No cooperation from Civic Bodies in Sealing Drive: Municipal Committee tells SC

A monitoring committee appointed by the Supreme Court, which is entrusted with the task of carrying out sealing and demolition drive against illegal construction in Delhi, told the top court on Tuesday that civic authorities were not assisting with it in conducting the drive.

The monitoring committee, which comprises of former advisor to Election Commissioner K J Rao, Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) chairman Bhure Lal and Major General (Retd) Som Jhingan was revived by the apex court for sealing unauthorised constructions in Delhi.

The monitoring committee, through senior advocate Ranjit Kumar who is assisting the apex court as amicus curiae, placed its report before a vacation bench of Justices U U Lalit and Deepak Gupta.

Kumar told the court that the municipal authorities have said that since the amendment in the Master Plan of Delhi-2021 was still under consideration, they would not allow sealing to proceed.

Kumar alleged that the SC monitoring committee had inspected a few areas in South Delhi on June 8 and asked the SDMC to take action against some illegal constructions but it refused.

Kumar then urged the court for an urgent hearing. The SC bench agreed to hear the plea on June 14, and issued a notice regarding the same to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
