New Jersey Court imposes $117 m penalty on Johnson & Johnson baby powder for using cancer causing asbestos in its powder

New York :A New Jersey court awarded a $117 million compensation to a man who said his asbestos-related cancer was caused by long-term use of J&J’s Baby Powder .The verdict against Johnson & Johnson(J&J) could expose the company to series of litigation worldwide .The company is already fighting some 6,000 cases claiming its baby powder and Shower to Shower products cause ovarian cancer.

Stephen Lanzo, a New Jersey resident through his lawyers claimed that internal J&J documents produced during trial showed that baby powder had been contaminated with asbestos. The person developed Mesothelioma, a rare cancer,  which he claimed was a direct result of his continuously using baby powder since his birth in 1972.The company said documents have no such evidence, reference to asbestos is only cautionary. The company's lawyer said decades of testing by independent laboratories have found J&J powder safe for human use.

J&J has vowed to appeal the New Jersey verdict .It denies asbestos has ever been present in their products or that their talc can cause any form of cancer.
