Mumbai Blast, 1993: SC sentence life imprisonment to Abu Salem and served death penalty to Merchant and Feroze

The crown prince of Mumbai Underworld and Right hand of Dawood Ibrahim sentenced to life imprisonment for having deep connections in plotting a series of bomb explosions that took place in Mumbai on 12, March, 1993. The Supreme Court today, passed death sentence to two of the five convicts held accused in Mumbai Blast case under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act and sentenced life imprisonment to two others.

Taher Merchant and Feroze Khan received death penalty whereas Abu Salem and Karimullah Khan were sentenced to life imprisonment and Riyaz Siddiqui, one of the five convict was sentenced 10 years of captivity.    

After a batch of intense arguments carried out by prosecution and defense since June 16 when the Court convicted Feroze, Salem, Merchant, and Karimullah on criminal offenses of conspiring the blast, murder and carrying out vicious acts of terrorism that took 257 lives and left 713 injured. Siddiqui was held convicted of trivial offenses for helping terrorists and supplying explosives and weapons.

Abu Salem was extradited from Portugal 12 years ago and then tried to trigger the blast that killed 257 people, but cannot sentence to death because of a guarantee to the Portuguese. He was transporting ammunitions and arsenals from Gujrat to Mumbai and were caught by Portuguese in 2002. He, even, supplied weapons to the Film Star Sanjay Dutt, who was held accused of having illegal possession of AK 47, bullets and hand grenades in his house on Jan 16, 1993.   

The Court also slapped a fine of Rs. 2,00,000 on Abu Salem and Karimullah Khan for aiding terrorists and delivering arsenals and explosives. Other accused in the case, including Dawood Ibrahim, one of the masterminds behind the explosion and India’s most wanted terrorist, still on the run.

In a previous Judgment passed in 2007 in this case, wherein anti-terrorism court convicted 100 people, but later 23 of them were acquitted. Yakub Menon was hanged in 2015, after his final appeal for mercy was rejected by the Supreme Court.

A series of 13 blasts trembled the streets and burned the entire Mumbai City on March 12, 1993, also demolished property of worth Rs. 27 Crore. Various important locations were targeted by the terrorist including Air India Building, Bombay Stock Exchange, Zaveri Bazar, Sea Rock Hotel, and Juhu Centaur.
