Madras HC grants permission to bury Karunanidhi at Marina Beach

The Madras High Court today granted permission for burial of M Karunanidhi’s behind Anna Samadhi on the Marina Beach in Chennai.

A division bench of the High Court consisting of Acting Chief Justice HG Ramesh and Justice SS Sundar passed the order on a plea filed by the DMK.

The DMK had approached the Madras HC on Tuesday (7 August) night after the AIADMK government in the state declined the former's request for allowing the burial of and a memorial for Karunanidhi on the Marina Beach. The state government had instead allocated two acres of land at Gandhi Mandapam for Karunanidhi's burial.

Defending its decision, the state government said that the memorial should not be allowed on Marina beach since Karunanidhi was not a sitting CM at the time of his death. Further, it also referred to several pending cases against burial space at the Marina beach.

The court had commenced an emergency hearing on the matter on Tuesday night. However, the hearing Karunanidhi's Burial was adjourned in the wee hours of Wednesday, when the government sought more time to file a reply.

The court then resumed the hearing on the matter at 8 this morning, and all five petitions challenging construction on the Marina beach were dismissed as withdrawn.
