Live-Streaming of Court is Opposed by the Orissa HC Bar Association

The Orissa HC Bar Association has spoken out against the live broadcasting of court proceedings, which is set to commence on August 2, claiming that it will degrade the institution’s dignity.

The Orissa Live streaming of Court Proceedings Rules have been published in order to expand the use of the open court concept. Matrimonial cases, cases involving children and juveniles, and cases involving the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act will not be streamed live. In-camera hearings will continue to be held in cases involving sexual offences, gender-based abuse against women, the Official Secrets Act, national security, and Habeas Corpus petitions

“The live streaming of court proceedings has its implicit hazards because it is amenable to public access even at all odd places/locations unless reasonable and proper care is taken after taking into confidence the members of the Bar for protecting the dignity and majesty of Courts and institutions at large,” the Association wrote.

The Association has asked the Chief Justice to put the live streaming rules on hold. The Court will also begin hearing cases in both virtual and physical modes on Monday. (09 June 2021)
