Karti Chidambaram sent to judicial custody till March 24

New Delhi : Showing no leniency, the CBI court  sent senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram to judicial custody till March 24 in the INX Media corruption case. The court said it will hear the bail plea as scheduled on March 15.

After listening to counsel from both sides, Special CBI judge Sunil Rana dismissed the bail plea and sent Karti to judicial custody till March 24.Where CBI counsel did not seek extension of the custody, counsel for Karti had moved bail application.

The  court also dismissed Karti Chidambaram's plea seeking allotment of a separate cell and bathroom in Tihar Jail saying that in view of father's status as ex-minister, the Judge Sunil Rana said he cannot be treated different from the other accused as wrong message will be sent.

But Rana directed the lock-up in-charge and jail superintendent of Tihar jail to provide “proper safety and security” to Karti Chidambaram as per the Delhi Prison Rules, stated in the Delhi Jail Manual.

Karti Chidambaram was arrested in February for allegedly taking money to facilitate Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media in 2007 when his father was the Finance Minister in the United Progressive Alliance government.

Defense counsel Dayan Krishnan appearing for Karti, moved the application seeking adequate security and that he should not be kept with other prisoners, while maintaining that there was a clear threat perception as several terrorists had been prosecuted during P Chidambaram's tenure as the union home minister. Karti Chidambaram's father has dealt with various stringent penal laws such as TADA, MCOCA, Unlawful (Activities) Prevention Act and NDPS Act.

CBI counsel V K Sharma opposed the application for a separate cell and bathroom saying there was no threat to Karti.

To this, Krishnan said it was shocking that the investigating agency was objecting to Karti's security in jail and such objection also enhanced the threat perception.

Reacting to the probe agency's submission, defense counsel said that there is serious apprehension of threat to Karti Chidambaram's life as CBI is opposing his plea seeking security arrangements in Tihar Jail.

The court, however, allowed Karti to carry spectacles and medicines as per prescription subject to examination and approval by the jail doctor, but denied his request to carry toiletries, books, clothes and home food.

Karti is alleged to have been paid over Rs. 3 crore by the two former co-owners of the media house, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, who are currently in jail on charges of murdering Sheena Bora, the daughter of Indrani.

The CBI says it is preparing to get Peter Mukherjee's custody to follow the money trail further.
