Justice UU Lalit Sworn-In As The 49th Chief Justice Of India

New Delhi: On Saturday, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was sworn in as India's 49th Chief Justice. In the morning hours, President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice UU Lalit at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He takes the place of Justice NV Ramana, who retired on August 26.

In accordance with convention and seniority norms, Justice Ramana recommended Justice Lalit as his successor. Following that, the President confirmed Justice Lalit's appointment as the new Chief Justice of India.

On the eve of taking over from outgoing CJI N V Ramana, Justice  Lalit outlined three priorities that he would strive to achieve during his 74-day tenure. Justice Lalit has identified three areas in which he plans to work.

These include ensuring that the Supreme Court has at least one constitution bench operating throughout the year, listing cases for hearing in the apex court, as well as mentioning urgent matters.

“I have always believed that the role of the Supreme Court is to lay down law with clarity, consistency, and the best possible way to do it is to have larger benches as early as possible, wherever the matters are referred to such benches so that the issues get clarified immediately, the matter has consistency and the people are well aware of what exactly are the contours of the peculiar positions in law”, Justice Lalit said.

He stated that the second aspect he noticed was during the Chief Justices' and Chief Ministers' conference when Justice Ramana meticulously and forcefully tried to persuade all of the chief ministers and chief justices to focus on issues concerning the district and lower judiciary infrastructure.

Justice Lalit will serve as CJI for less than three months before retiring on November 8 of this year. The retirement age for Supreme Court judges is 65.
