Jammu and Kashmir High Court ordered the release of separatist leader Masarat Alam, Copy of the High Court order shows that the state presented a weak prosecution which led to Masarat Alam's release.

“No material is placed on record that all those persons, after allegedly meeting the detenue, did actually indulge in such activities that would either adversely impact security of the State or public order,” reads a part of the order, adding that there was no record of what the four individuals did after meeting Masarat Alam.

The order was passed on the basis of Masarat Alam's meeting on August 11 this year with four persons who visited him at District Jail, Baramulla.

The persons had requested authorities to allow them meet one Assadullah Parray, who is allegedly affiliated with Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Geelani.

The authorities claimed that instead of meeting Parray, they met Bhat, who allegedly advised them to activate the workers for a more visible and prominent role in the turmoil.

Masarat Alam has been under preventive custody under the Public Safety Act since April 2015.

The Opposition has now questioned the Jammu and Kashmir government for its laxity to frame a strong case against the separatist leader.

“The policy of state government is very soft against separatists,” said Harsh Dev Singh, Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP). “It is very obvious that they didn’t make a strong case against Alam. The government should have contested the case in all seriousness, which they haven’t done,” he added.

The Congress has termed it unfortunate and that the “duplicity” of the BJP-PDP government has been exposed.

“The government has not defended their case properly in the court. I think this government is trying to fool the people. On one head they claim they are against terrorism and separatist leaders and on the other, they release separatists like Alam,” said RS Chib of the Congress.
