Jay Amit Shah: The Wire criticises injunction order against article on Jay Shah

An Ahmedabad court in India has ordered news website "The Wire" not to publish any report about Jay Shah, Son of Bhartiya Janta Party President Amit Shah till the defamation suit filed by the latter against the website is disposed of.

The Wire was served with the court's order on October 16, the same being passed ex-parte.

In a statement headed 'Jay Amit Shah Attempts to Gag The Wire', issued pursuant to the restraining order, The Wire said, "It will be evident to anyone reading the Special Civil Suit that no single factual error has been substantively shown or pleaded against The Wire. No case of untruth has been made out against The Wire. Indeed, the plaint acknowledges that the full text of the lawyer's exchange with The Wire was available on the website on the date of filing the suit, which is shown as October 12, 2017. Incidentally October 12, 2017 is also the date of the text of Order. The time of filing the suit, this is shown as October 12, 2017. Incidentally October 12, 2017 is also the date of the text of Order. The time of filing the suit or of the passing of "Order below Exhibit 5" is not available with The Wire. It goes without saying that this that this attempt to gag The Wire will not go unchallenged".

The website has also uploaded a copy of the order and said it received a set of photocopied documents on October 16.
