INX MEDIA CASE: P. Chidambaram moves Delhi High Court seeking Regular Bail

Former Union Minister and Senior Advocate P. Chidambaram has moved an application before the Delhi High Court on Wednesday seeking grant of regular bail in the INX Media money laundering case.

Chidambaram has also challenged the order dated 5.9.2019 passed by the Special CBI Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar thereby sending him to 14 days judicial custody till 19 September.

The plea has been filed under section 482 Cr.P.C by Chidambaram’s lawyer alleging that the order passed by trial court sending Chidambaram to 14 days judicial custody is against the settled principals of law and the arrest itself was illegal in nature as it was done by abusing the process enumerated under the provisions of law.

It has been alleged by Chidambaram that the present criminal case against him and his son is nothing more but an outcome of political vendetta and is malafide in nature.

It is also significantly mentioned that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is acting at the behest of Central Government which wants to malign the untainted and unimpeachable reputation of P. Chidambaram.

On August 20, the Delhi High Court had dismissed the anticipatory bail plea filed by Chidambaram, following which, the Senior Congress Leader was arrested by the CBI on August 21 from his jor bagh residence and was sent to police remand on August 22 by a Special CBI Court.

The Supreme Court on 5th September had also dismissed the Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by Chidambaram challenging the Delhi High Court order of August 20 and had given him the liberty to move appropriate regular bail application before the concerned trial court.

Chidambaram has been since then lodged in a separate cell in Tihar Jail in Delhi keeping in view that he was protected under the Z-security category by Central Government.

The INX Media case is related to alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given by P. Chidambaram in 2007 to media group INX Media receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 307 crore. P. Chidambaram was the Union Finance Minister in 2007 during the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government when the clearance was given by him.
