India elected as non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council

India has been elected as a non-permanent member of the powerful United Nations Security Council for a two-year term on July 17, 2020, winning 184 votes in the 193-member General Assembly.

The Security Council elections were held on July 17, 2020 was also won by Ireland, Mexico and Norway.

The vote was casted by 192 Member States, with a requisite majority of 2/3 being 128. There were 184 votes for India.

Member States have elected India for the term 2021-22, with overwhelming support, to the non-permanent Security Council seat. Out of the 192 valid votes polled, India received 184 votes; India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations tweeted.

India is going to sit in the most powerful United Nations organ, for two years from 1 January, 2021 with five permanent members, China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States, as well as the non-permanent members Estonia, Niger, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam.

India was a candidate for a non-permanent Asia-Pacific seat for the 2021-22 term. Its victory was definite since it was the only candidate to compete for a lone seat in the group. New Delhi's candidacy was unanimously endorsed by the 55-member Asia-Pacific Group, including China and Pakistan, last year in the month of June.

The Permanent Representative of India, T.S. Tirumurti said that India’s presence in the Security Council would help bring its ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam to the world.

"India 's journey with the United Nations is quite remarkable. As a founding member of the United Nations, India 's contribution to the implementation of the objectives of United Nations Charter and the development of UN specialized agencies and programs has been substantial, and in many ways quite extraordinary," Mr. Tirumurti said in a video message ahead of the elections.

"I am confident that at a time when we are preparing to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and later the 75th anniversary of India's independence in 2022, India 's presence in the Security Council will help bring to the world our ethos that the world is one family-Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," he said.

India has been at the forefront for years and has made efforts to reform the Security Council, and rightly said that it deserves a place as a permanent member of the Council which, in its present form, does not represent the geopolitical realities of the 21st century.
