In four decades, SC dealt with 67 Cases of Rape & Murder where Victims were aged below 16

The Supreme Court of India has approximately dealt with 67 cases of rape and murder since last forty years. In those 67 cases, the victims were under 16 years of age and death sentences were given to only 12 cases. At first the Supreme Court had affirmed death sentences to 15 cases but later in a review petition the death sentences were reduced to 12 cases and the rest 3 cases the convicted persons were given life imprisonment.

The Supreme Court claimed that, as of the year, the death penalty was confirmed in 12 out of 67 cases where the key crimes allegedly committed were rape and murder and the victims were approximately 16 years of age or under.

The Supreme Court also stated that out of 67 in 51 cases the victims were aged less than 12 years of age. These facts are stated in a Supreme Court judgment that commuted the death penalty granted to a man who was accused of rape and murder of a two and half year old girl in Maharashtra in the year 2013 to a life term.
