Hearing on Petitions Challenging Article 35A Adjourned till January 2019: SC

The Supreme Court today again deferred its hearing on the petitions challenging the Constitution’s Article 35A until January 19 next year.

The matter was listed before a bench of CJI Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud.

The SC bench adjourned the hearing in the matter after the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government argued that – any debate and discussion on – Article 35 A could cause a law and order situation in the state ahead of the upcoming Panchayat and local body elections.

Let the elections take place. We are told there is law and order problem,” the SC bench said.

Though the dates for the local body and Panchayat polls in Jammu and Kashmir have not been declared yet, reports says that the elections are likely to be held by the end of September.
