HC directs Private Schools to reduce Tuition Fees by 20% amid COVID-19 Pandemic

A PIL was filed by a group of guardians from approximately 145 schools from the state of West Bengal. On Tuesday, 13th October, 2020, all private schools of West Bengal were directed by Calcutta High Court, to charge tuition fees by deducting 20 percent less in this pandemic period. The direction of the High Court must be applied to all the private schools of the State.

Earlier, in May 2020, a petition was brought before the High Court of Calcutta seeking guidance from the Government of Bengal to control the fee structure of unaided private schools.

The Court had established a 3 member committee, and there responsibility is to look after all the matters in detail regarding the school fees and grievances. If any guardian wanted to get more relief that is relief more than 20 percent which has been directed by the Court, then the guardian can contact the children’s schools individually.

The petitioner further pleaded for a direction from the Court to the Government of West Bengal, to not impose fine or extra fees on the guardians in this pandemic period.
