HC: Conversion to another religion only for the purpose of marriage is unacceptable

The Allahabad High Court had dismissed a petition which was filed by a married couple asking for  police protection as they don’t want their family members to interfere in their married life. Dismissing the petition the Court was of the view that conversion of religion only to get married is not valid.

The first petitioner in this case was a Muslim girl and she converted her religion to Hinduism on 29.06.2020 and both the petitioners got married according to Hindu rites and rituals on 31.07.2020. This clearly proves that the girl had accepted Hinduism only because of the marriage.

Justice M.C. Tripathi while hearing the plea referred to a case ‘Noor Jahan Begum, alias Anjali Mishra, and Another Vs State of UP (Writ - C No. - 57068 of 2014)’, where the Court held that, conversion of religion only for marriage is not acceptable. By referring to this case the Court had dismissed the petition of the married couple.
