Government Plans to Raise Retirement Age of SC and HC Judges

Amid concerns over pendency of cases in Indian courts, the government is considering a plan to increase the retirement age of judges in higher judiciary.

According to government sources, the government will raise the retirement age of SC judges from 65 to 67, while the retirement age of HC judges will be extended from 62 to 64.

The sources also said that the government is thinking over introducing a new Bill in Parliament (regarding the matter) in the Monsoon session that begins today.

Considering that increasing the retirement age necessitates a constitutional amendment, the government will most likely cite the massive shortage of judges in higher judiciary to bring about the said change.

A parliamentary committee had, on March this year, urged the government to “increase the retirement age of SC and HC judges to tide over their shortage in higher judiciary”.
