Former New York Assembly Speaker Silver found guilty of corruption charges

New York: Former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, whose appeal against corruption in one case was upheld by appeals court, was convicted on corruption charges in another case by a jury in Manhattan federal court.

A Democrat, Silver,74,represented Manhattan’s Lower East Side and was speaker of the Assembly speaker for twenty one long years from 1994 to 2015.He along with Governor Andrew Cuomo and former Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, effectively decided New York legislative policies. Both Silver and Skelos faced corruption charges and convicted.

Silver was convicted in November 2015 for 12 years where as Skelos was convicted in December 2015 for 5 years. Both won appeals against conviction. In July 2017 Silver appeal against the conviction was upheld as the appeals court ruled that the jury had received improper instructions in light of the Supreme Court’s 2016 decision overturning the corruption conviction of former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell. In that ruling the Supreme Court ruled that routine political activities such as arranging meetings or reaching out to public officials were not “official acts” that could be prosecuted under federal bribery law.

In the present case Silver was charged with receiving $4 million in bribes and kickbacks in lieu of diverting government money to a prominent cancer researcher and supporting a real estate developer’s interests on rent legislation. The jury found him guilty of all seven charges leveled against him.

U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman in Manhattan said that Silver “took an oath to act in the best interests of the people of New York State.” Berman said, he sold public office for private greed.
