Former cycling champion Lance Armstrong pay $ 5 million dollar to settle U.S. federal fraud case

One of the greatest cycling hero of all time but now disgraced, cycling champion Lance Armstrong  agreed to settle a long standing Federal law suit by paying $5 million as damages to image of his principal sponsor U.S. Postal Service, caused by his using performance-enhancing drugs.

On behalf of Post Office, his friend and former team mate Floyd Landis had filed a  $100 m claim in damages to the Post Office. Landis originally brought the lawsuit in 2010 under a federal law, the False Claims Act, that lets whistle-blowers pursue fraud cases on behalf of the government, and obtain rewards if successful. The U.S. government joined the law suit alleging cheating with the government. But the parties concerned reached an agreement with Armstrong agreeing to pay $5 m as damages.

Out of this Floyd received $1.1m as his share of compensation. Incidentally Floyd ,who is also a winner of Tour de France was himself  accused of having taken drugs to enhance his performance in 2006.

Texas resident, 46 year Armstrong, won the biggest race in professional cycling, the Tour de France, a record seven times, six of them while riding for the Postal Service team. But in 2012 all the titles were taken from him and he was banned for life after U.S. doping agency accused him of taking performance enhancing drugs. He  admitted to the cheating in a January 2013 televised interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Armstrong said in a statement that he is happy that the matter is over and he can lead his life freely.
