For the First Time, Gujarat High Court streams proceedings on YouTube

Gujarat High Court on Monday 26, 2020, for the first time on an experimental basis held live streaming of court proceedings on Youtube. This technique is being implemented for the general public to watch court proceedings from any part of the world through online mode. Chief Justice Vikram Nath had issued an order on Monday 26, 2020 stating that the High Court has already taken some methods to give access to anyone who wants to watch court proceedings live.

The live streaming on Monday 26, 2020 which was aired on Youtube was only an experiment, and will only continue further if the experiment is successful.

This was largely guided by the direction of the Supreme Court in the 2017 public interest litigation for video streaming of court hearings. The verdict of the HC was also based on a public interest litigation which was filed by a law student at the Institute of Law, Nirma University, in which the petitioner made an appeal for public access of the court proceedings that had been taken to the virtual medium.

From March 24, 2020, since the lock down started, the physical premises of Gujarat High Court had been shut down for the safety of the general public due to the pandemic. According to the record, on the first day of live streaming, 1,500 people had viewed the court proceedings on the YouTube channel. Open to everyone, this would be the first time where the court hearings could be seen openly by all.
