FIR lodged against Maharaja Agrasen hospital for negligently handling dead body of a corona virus patient

Delhi Police has lodged  FIR against the senior management of Maharaja Agrasen Hospital on receiving a complaint from the Sub-Division Magistrate of Punjabi BaghThe complaint depicted that a 72-year-old female patient, who was a resident of Rohtak, was  admitted at Maharaja Agrasen Hospital on March 10was found COVID-19 positive and eventually died. It has been alleged in the complaint that due to the negligence of doctors and management not only other patients of the ward but the medical staff of the hospital was also found positive of COVID-19. 

An order was given on 7 April by Dharmendra Kumar, ADM West, asking those who visited the hospital from 13 March to 7 April to stay home- quarantined for the next 15 days.

The police said they received 

Following orders from Chief District Medical Officer West, the hospital authorities carried out a COVID-19 check on patients in the five-meter periphery of the female patient and 82 other staff members who came into contact with her.

The police quoted that “It was found that six employees of the hospital were found to be COVID-19 positive”.

Another patient, belonging to Sonipat died in the hospital on April 4 after testing COVID-19 positive as the patient was admitted in the same ward in which the 72 year old woman was admitted. “The hospital authorities handed over the body to the deceased person’s relatives without informing local authorities”. The police said.

According to the police, the hospital breached the guidelines on the management of dead bodies for COVID-19 patients released by the central government. A thorough inquiry was conducted by the District Magistrate of the West District of Delhi. The deceased's family members also did not tell anyone about the corona virus-positive status of the deceased, as a result of which many people attended the cremation.

The son of the deceased person was also tested positive for COVID-19. The police has lodged the FIR under several parts of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), The Epidemic Act and The Disaster Management Act against the senior management of the hospital for negligence in informing local authorities and handing over the dead body of the corona virus victim in breach of the government guidelines.
