Extradition of Mallya: Fugitive businessman to be flown and booked in Mumbai

Upon extradition to India, Vijay Mallya would be flown to Mumbai as the case against him had been registered there, and sources in the investigative agencies had been disclosed to IANS on Wednesday.

The fugitive businessman will be accompanied by officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). A medical team will perform a health check-up at Mumbai Airport.

If Mallya lands in Mumbai at night, he's going to have to spend some time at the CBI office in the city. He will be produced in a court later that day.

If he arrives during the day, he will be taken straight to the court where the CBI will request his custody. Later, ED will also seek custody of him, sources said.

Hearing Mallya 's plea in August 2018, the UK court had asked the Indian investigating agencies to share details of the prison where he will be held after his extradition. The agencies then shared a cell video at Arthur Road Jail, Mumbai, where they planned to keep Mallya after extradition.

The agencies also informed the United Kingdom court that Mallya would be locked in one of the high security barracks located in a two-storey building in the Arthur Road Jail complex.

Mallya is wanted in India in a 9,000 crore loan default case involving 17 banks. On 14 May, he lost his appeal to the United Kingdom Supreme Court against extradition to India.
