DHINAKARAN'S CLAIM OVER 'PRESSURE COOKER' SYMBOL REFUSED BY SUPREME COURT

Dhinakaran group had submitted a list of 40 candidates for parliamentary elections in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. 19 candidates were also named for the Assembly by elections on 19 seats in Tamil Nadu (18) and Puducherry (1).
The Election Commission told the apex court on Monday that it can allot a common symbol of "pressure cooker" to an individual but not to an unregistered group.
Dhinakaran told the Court that the EC's stand would lead to the candidates of his Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on different symbols.
The Supreme Court bench then asked the EC official to apprise it as to why a common symbol was not allotted to the AMMK. Election Commission official contended that as per the rules a common symbol cannot be given to the AMMK as it was not a registered political party. Also, that the election process has already started and it would be difficult to allot a common symbol.
On March 15, the court had issued notice to the EC that Dhinakaran be allowed to use 'pressure cooker' as a common symbol.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to acknowledge the claim of the TTV Dhinakaran-led outfit over 'pressure cooker' as common election symbol. It was however directed by Supreme Court that a common free election symbol be allotted to the candidates of the Dhinakaran-led outfit for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and assembly by-elections in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
