SC reserves verdict in Aadhaar case

New Delhi: Marathon hearing in Aadhaar case has ended. The hearing went on for 38 days with multiple PIL’s filed by individuals and entities challenging the Aadhaar act on the grounds of invading of privacy. Whereas the government defended it and listed its benefits saying it will stop pilferage of subsidies and this is till date most accurate and authentic identification proof for an individual.

Given the importance of the case, it has been heard by five judge constitution bench led by CJI Dipak Misra. The verdict is expected in either July or August.

Aadhaar was initially said to be of use for those who were going to avail subsidy as it recorded biometrics of the individual which would help in establishing the authenticity of the person availing the benefit from the government. It was touted as something which would go a long way in stopping pilferage or misuse of subsidies. But later the government increased its ambit and made it mandatory for carrying financial transactions or even for phone. The governments made it mandatory to link mobile phones, bank accounts, demat accounts and other financial instruments linked to Aadhaar card. The date for linking Aadhaar card  have been extended few times already but ultimately is it constitutionally valid or not will be decided by the SC verdict.
