“I am a strict man, I am what I am, I cannot change”, says CJI Ranjan Gogoi

Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi known for his strictness, on his very first day in office, made it clear that he will continue to be “strict” in dealing with cases and the judicial administration.

I am a strict man, I am what I am, I cannot change,” Chief Justice Gogoi said at an event organised in his honour by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) after court hours on Wednesday.

CJI statement came in reply to SCBA President Vikas Singh’s remarks that Justice Gogoi is known to be strict.

Singh brought up the tough attitude of Justice Gogoi while speaking at the event and urged the CJI to be more lenient towards the Bar, especially towards the junior lawyers.

Justice Gogoi, you’re known to be strict but the members of the Bar request that sometimes you will show leniency towards the Bar, especially the young members”, Singh said in his speech.

In the felicitation function, Justice Gogoi also clarified on his remark – he made in the morning on the first day of his office – stating that “mentioning would only be allowed for urgent matters for the time being”.

Let me tell you, me and my colleagues are trying to prepare a system which will function better. We are trying to reduce the time between filing and listing of cases. We are trying to introduce a system where cases don’t get dropped and if we succeed, perhaps a large section of mentioning will go away altogether, it’s not the Chief Justice who will drop mentioning but mentioning will die out automatically,” CJI Gogoi said.

CJI Gogoi also responded to the Attorney General KK Venugopal call for increasing the retirement age and salaries of judges.

Chief Justice Gogoi said that even if the salary and retirement age of the judges are increased, there won’t possibly be any takers for the post of judges, unless the aura and dignity associated with the office of a judge are not maintained.

Learned AG mentioned about the salaries of the judges and the age of retirement. But, give as much money as you want and raise the age to whatever you want but it won’t solve the issue. Till the aura and the dignity of the office are not maintained, there will be no takers,” the newly appointed CJI said.
