Delhi Riots 2020: Group of Lawyers seek immediate intervention of Delhi HC to stop 'ugly raids' on Advocates representing Muslim Victims

A request had been made to the Delhi High Court by a group of 21 lawyers to take immediate actions against the police officials who had conducted a raid in the offices of two advocates who are representing the Muslim victims of the Delhi riots. The lawyers had also requested to restrain the police officials from conducting these types of uncontrolled raids any further. The lawyers had stated that, the searches on the offices of Mehmood Pracha and Javed Ali, and the way in which they were executed, were a matter of great concern to the whole class of lawyers.

The lawyers had submitted a letter to the Delhi High Court Bar Association where it stated that, after receiving a search warrant from the Court, the police officials had conducted a raid in the offices of the two lawyers and had seized computers, confidential data, electronic digital devices which contains both professional as well as personal data. The lawyers contended that, the police officials are not authorized to conduct a raid in this manner. The two advocates were dealing with few sensitive cases regarding Delhi violence in which the role of Delhi police is already questionable.

The lawyers also contended that, these types of raid in the offices of the lawyers clearly indicate that these raids were purposely designed to refrain the two lawyers from pursuing the cases of the Muslim victims of Delhi violence. It's not just a matter of client-attorney privilege; it's a matter of an assault by Delhi police on the justice system of the country. The letter deplored the fact that, unlike the High Court of Allahabad, which intervened last week in the case of a violent attack by the police officials of Etah on an advocate, the High Court of Delhi has so far not taken any action against the Delhi police.

Dealing with these uncontrolled situations, the advocates wanted the Bar to take an action for the protection of their rights and privileges. The events at issue are not only the personal concerns of Mahmood Pracha and Javed Ali, but they pose problems that affect the whole legal fraternity. The group lawyers have requested the members of the Bar to respond in unity and take actions to stop these brutal conducts of the police.
