Clarification on actions to be taken by Supreme Court against fake news being circulated on Social Media

The SC has taken into consideration the panic which is being created by the circulation of fake videos and messages on social media including but not limited to Whatsapp, Facebook etc. The messages have been creating a sense of fear amongst the general public as regards the information which is not even true.

The Apex court has taken a view to balance free press and the need to prevent chaos in society in the midst of an unexpected crisis.

As per the orders of the court, a daily bulletin from India's government across all media channels, including social media and forums to clear people's doubts, would be allowed within 24 hours as submitted by India's Solicitor-General. "We do not intend to intervene with the free debate of the pandemic but guide the media to refer to the developments and publish the official version," the court ordered.

In furtherance to the observations of the Apex court, Secretary, Union Ministry for Home Affairs, Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla has ordered all the States and UTs to take effective measures to crush fake news and create a web portal to verify unauthentic news promptly.
