CJI Ranjan Gogoi led 5 judge benches to hear Ayodhya case

A five-judge Constitution Bench of the Apex Court, led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and will include his successor SA Bobde, NV Ramana, UU Lalit and DY Chandrachud. will decide on 10 January when to take up the Ayodhya land title case suit.

If the senior-most judge is appointed the Chief Justice of India, as has been the custom but for twice in independent India, then Justices S A Bobde, N V Ramanna, U Lalit and D Y Chandrachud, are set to be the next four chief justices.

CJI’s decision efficiently repealed an earlier decision of former CJI Dipak Misra in which he had refused to place the issue for hearing before a Constitution bench.

Members of BJP and right-wing groups want an executive ordinance to enable the construction of Ram Mandir before the general elections are announced. Last year, the Apex Court refused an early hearing.

Newly formed bench does not include the other two judges Justice Abdul Nazir and Justice Ashok Bhushan who had earlier heard the case. Justice Nazir had, in fact, given a dissenting order urging the court to list the case before a five-judge bench, but he was overruled 2:1. Former CJI Misra has since demitted office

On Friday, the Supreme Court had delayed the Ayodhya Ram Mandir case in just a 60-second hearing, and said a bench would decide on January 10 when to take up the case.

The Ayodhya dispute is over 2.7 acres of land on which the Babri Masjid stood before it was demolished on December 6, 1992.
