CJI Dipak Misra urged HCs for early disposal of the over 2.8 crore pending cases

Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra's repeated requests convinced all the high courts except the Bombay HC to hold court on Saturdays to dispose of 10-year-old criminal cases in which the accused have been in jail.

After CJI Misra's first letter to chief justices on September 4, seven HCs — Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Patna — held court on the first succeeding Saturday on September 9 and decided 111 such cases.

While 19 of the 24 HCs held court on multiple Saturdays, understanding the CJI's deep conviction for the early disposal of the over 2.8 crore pending cases, the Bombay HC was a notable exception, not holding court on a single Saturday in the last three months. The Meghalaya and Sikkim HCs did not sit on any Saturday either, while the J&K and Manipur HCs did but did not settle any case.

The Calcutta HC sat for one Saturday, on December 16, and disposed of 17 old criminal cases. The Kerala HC held Saturday court just once, on September 23, and disposed of one case.

The Madhya Pradesh HC was top, disposing of 321 cases. It was followed by the Chhattisgarh HC with 186, the Patna HC with 177, the Punjab & Haryana HC with 152, the Gujarat HC with 125 and the Orissa HC with 71. Together, the HCs disposed of 1,410 cases by sitting on Saturdays in three months.

CJI Misra again wrote to the CJs on December 26 and said,"I once again impress upon you to explore the possibility of hearing criminal appeals, which are pending for more than 10 years, on Saturdays, by specially constituted benches for the purpose, after obtaining the consent of the state counsel and the defence counsel. This will go a long way in ensuring speedy disposal of criminal appeals."
